On mbaindia.org we grade programme types and deliberately keep our partner institutions out of the grades — IICT is one of them. So this page does something different. It grades the instrument: what an autonomous institute diploma is actually good for, use by use, including the uses where the honest grade is “not for you”.
The Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade (IICT), Lucknow, is an autonomous institute whose society registration dates to the 1860 Act and whose teaching record starts in 1997. It awards its own diplomas. no UGC degree status attaches, and UGC purview stops short of them — the institute is upfront on both points — which already puts it ahead of a large part of the credential market. Its flagship two-year management programme spans 30+ specialisations, runs by distance and online, admits by profile review rather than an entrance test, and costs ₹32,350 complete, paid to the institute directly against a receipt.
Two more facts belong in the file. IICT also fills the centre role for SVSU — in full, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University at Meerut, NAAC A accredited — on its UGC-entitled distance MBA: there the degree and its entitlement rest with the university, the teaching and mentoring with IICT. And an academic MoU links IICT with Amity University — cooperation between organisations that puts nothing in any student’s hands, so give it no weight in your decision.

Use 1 · Capability
This is the use the instrument was built for. An autonomous institute controls its own syllabus and can revise it without routing changes through a university board of studies, and the programme is shaped around working adults studying at a distance. If your real question is “will I learn usable management?”, the diploma-versus-degree debate is irrelevant to you — nobody checks the entitlement of what is in your head.
Use 2 · Speed and cost
₹32,350 complete for two years, by distance and online, with admission by profile review — no entrance-test year, no relocation, no loan. A total cost this small changes the risk calculus: the question stops being “will it pay back?” and becomes “is my time worth more than this?” Whatever you enrol in, insist on knowing what the fee actually covers before you pay.
Use 3 · Employer-funded development
A fee that fits inside most learning-and-development budgets, and a format that consumes no working hours, make this one of the easiest credentials to have an employer fund. The grade is not higher only because the case rests on your employer’s policy, not on anything IICT controls.
Use 4 · The CV line
Private hiring reads institutions, not entitlements. The employers on IICT’s record — the Indian Army, Reliance, HDFC, ICICI, Tata — run through the public sector and corporate India, and the credential will carry what the institute’s name carries with the person reading it: no more, no less. It can support a story about capability in an interview. It will not survive a checkbox that says “degree”.
Use 5 · Degree-gated eligibility
Government recruitment where the notification names a degree. PhD admission. A promotion policy whose text says “postgraduate degree”. Against a written rule that names a degree, a diploma is the wrong instrument, and no amount of teaching quality changes that. And grade it against the real alternative. For most working people weighing this, the comparison is not diploma versus degree — it is diploma versus another year of nothing. Against nothing, a structured two-year programme you actually finish wins easily. Against a UGC-entitled degree, it wins only when the degree’s paperwork adds nothing you need — which is exactly what the card above tells you.

Same city, same institute doing the teaching — different awarding body, different instrument. Never let anyone, including a counsellor, blur the two.
The only argument we will make is the one that survives checking. For most of their history the Indian Institutes of Management held no degree powers at all: those arrived with the IIM Act in 2018. What each society-registered IIM conferred before then was the PGDM, a diploma at postgraduate level — and nobody treated the country’s most sought-after management credential as second-rate for it. The lesson is not “therefore every diploma is an IIM diploma”. The lesson is that the award category alone tells you nothing; the issuer and the use you have for it tell you everything. Which is why this page grades uses, and why the main site grades routes rather than badges.
Girish Kousgi runs IIFL Home Finance as MD & CEO today and held the identical post at PNB Housing Finance before it. The qualifications disclosed for him in PNB Housing Finance’s statutory annual reports (FY22-23, FY23-24, FY24-25) include IICT’s executive master’s diploma in Business Administration. That is one verifiable data point in a public filing, and that is all it is: it is not evidence of typical outcomes, and no honest page will present one career as a forecast of yours.
No. Diplomas issued in IICT’s own name carry no UGC degree status and stand beyond UGC purview — the institute is plain about this, and so are we. If you need the word “degree”, the route is the SVSU distance MBA taught at IICT in its centre role; that degree, and the entitlement behind it, are the university’s.
